Observations and musings on Jacksonville Politics

Tea Parties Coming Back To The First Coast

Tea Parties are returning to the First Coast just in time for the July 4th weekend.  Fresh off the success of the first party, which organizers say drew nearly 2,000 people to a lunch-time event at the Jacksonville Landing, the Duval County Republican Party is planning a repeat performance on Thursday, July 2nd from 5:30 to 7:00.  Anxious, perhaps, to avoid any criticism of local government spending or the recently-proposed property tax increases, Republican organizers have asked that participants make signs focused on “Washington” and “big government spending.”  The participants have been asked to declare their “independence from tyranny.”

St. Augustine will hold a tea party of its own on July 5 at Castillo de San Marcos.

The Duval County Republican Party’s flyer is below…  UPDATE:  The Duval County Republican Party has said that although they “promoted” this event, they did not sponsor or plan it.  The flyer below has been updated to reflect the flyer that was originally e-mailed.  The sentence “Paid by Republican Party of Duval County” is at the bottom, referring to the party’s covering the cost to promote the event via e-mail.

  1. Betty Pawsheifer says:

Republican Mayor Peyton is proposing raising my taxes way more than Democratic President Obama.

  2. Ryan Dugger says:

kind of ironic that local republicans won’t say a word about tax increases republican mayor has pushed thru. guess lenny curry and crew don’t care about jacksonville. they’d rather make obama the bogey man than have the courage to stand up to local leaders in their own party.

  3. Laughing says:

Where were these protestors during the Bush years when he double the national debt and began the process of bailing out the banks and automakers? Is it really about spending or is it masking the inability of a segment of the population to accept a black President?

  4. Seamore Jane says:

Sorry to hit the same note, but the Payton administration raises taxes like Elizabeth Taylor changing husbands. The Tea Baggers are the whack-job element of the Republican party — zealots with no clue they are pawns in someone else’s game.

  5. Billly says:

These are mostly the same people who were complaining when Bush was irresponsible with spending, the myth of a Republican Party rank and file that stood by Bush with his spending is a fiction that people (such as yourself it would seem) like to use as a perch from which you can irresponsibly try to make this about Race, not about the insane deficits, irresponsible spending and misrepresentation that would make even a big spender like Bush blush.

  6. john q public says:

Why don’t you expose these people for who they are? This is actually an anti environmental reform and anti health care reform rally to sidetrack the Jacksonville public from knowing that the republican mayor is raising our taxes right now. These people will not give you one single statement of what THEY would recommend to help slow climate changes and protect our enviornment or for that matter how to help our country become less dependent of fossil fuels. THEY will not tell you what THEY recommend to do stop slow the skyrocketing health care inflation and growing #s of uninsured.

  7. johnsteve says:

The Tea Party is in no way affiliated with the Repulican Party.

  8. Laughing says:

johnsteve, if the Tea Party is not affiliated with the Republican Party of Duval County then why is Lenny Curry (the duval gop chairman) broadcasting live from the tea party tonight on AM 1320? why was cindy grave, the state committeewoman for duval county, touting it on the radio show and encouraging people to go? i got an e-mail invite to it. at the bottom of the e-mail, it said “paid by the republican party of duval county”

  9. johnsteve says:

because they have a political radio show and it is political news. a black helicopter is picking me up and aliens are at the controls. I think the republicans planned this.
Let me guess laughing. you voted for Ron Paul.

  10. Abel Harding says:

Actually, johnsteve, more than one person had asked me about that. The e-mail that was received announcing the tea party was clearly marked “Paid by Republican Party of Duval County” at the bottom. Just reporting the news here…not issuing judgement on the local GOP for holding the event, but the event was clearly advertised by them per the e-mail that was sent to me.

Hope that clears that technicality up.

  11. Austin says:

Abel, there’s a huge difference between promoting and actually planning an event.

  12. Northside Mom says:

Abel Harding, you aren’t really THAT stupid are you?? ARE you?? The “Paid by Republican Party of Duval County” strictly refers to the NOTICE that was emailed out – it does NOT mean that the EVENT is paid for by the Republican Party. But you already knew that – you’re just trying to stir up crap. PLEASE tell me you knew that. Otherwise, it will confirm to me once again that liberals ARE as stupid as I thought they were.

  13. Northside Mom says:

What’s amazing to me is that when conservatives are the ones who are successful in reining in Washington and getting the spending under control and getting our Constitution back intact, you whack jobs here will benefit just as much as those of us who actually did all the work. But, being liberals, you are already used to living off other people’s efforts, aren’t you.

  14. YuleeDude says:

Thats a good way to get a point across Mom. Hurl insults. It always wins people over to your side. Hey, didn’t the Republican party rule DC for over a decade and spending went bonkers?

  15. Billy says:

    Yulee Dude,
You are right, I almost want the Dems in charge, because at least they will be honest about robbing me blind to pay for dead end govenrment projects. The Republicans will just lie to me and then call us RINO’s when I dont want their bumpkin Alaska Governor or correct former Speaker from South Florida.

  16. Norris Hall says:

I am just as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!!!
Our socialist government is spending money like there was no end
It’s time to bring and end to the word “public”
An end to public health care
    An end to public education
    An end to public parks
    An end to public roads
    An end to public libraries
    An end to public police
    An end to public firefighters
    An end to public military
    An end to public politicians

It’s time to get rid of every socialistic institution in this country and hand it back to the private sector.

The private sector and market principles can do a better cheaper job than any government entity.

Show your support. Pull your children out of public schools. Avoid public libraries. Refuse to play in a public park. Don’t ride on public roads. Don’t call a public police if your house is robbed. Or a public firefighter if your house is on fire. And most of all, on election day, refuse to vote for any politician who makes a living as a public servant.

    Stand up for your beliefs!!!
