Reacting to the continuing construction slowdown, the City has eliminated 24 of the 134 positions within the Building Inspection Division of the Planning Department. Fourteen of the positions were currently vacant, but ten current employees will be let go. According to the Mayor’s office, permits are down nearly 20% over 2008 numbers—something that will certainly complicate projected revenues.
In addition to the cuts, the City has appointed Bill Killingsworth as Interim Director of the Planning Department. That position was recently vacated by Brad Thoburn. Mr. Killingsworth is the current Chief of Community Planning and has been a City planner since 1990.
