College President Looks To Skirt State Guidelines

Joe Pickens, the President of St. Johns River Community College and former legislator, has asked the state’s Commission on Ethics to give him “guidance” as he works to find a way around the state’s new ethics law which prohibit former legislators from lobbying their former colleagues until they have been away from Tallahassee for at least two years. Former legislators have long used their clout within the Legislature to secure top positions that require extensive lobbying after leaving the Legislature, something that the new ethics guidelines were specifically written to stop. Messr. Pickens’ new employer no doubt counted on the fact that the new law would be waived. More on this story can be found here.
